TIRANA − The Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) invite you to the workshop “Media and Police Corruption” on 22 of December 2016 at the Hotel Tirana International (Salla Onufri) at 11 AM.
The media plays an important role in informing the public about the activities and operations of the security institutions contributing in this way to strengthen accountability and oversight, and as a result to increase the efficiency of these institutions. An important aspect of accountability and oversight of security institutions is preventing and curbing corruption.
In the context of Albania, the oversight of the security sector by the Parliament and independent institutions is weak; the role of the media takes even a greater importance. Although media coverage of corruption has been intense, it has been primarily focused on the identification of specific cases of corruption and often motivated as media scoops.
In this regard, the IDM organizes this workshop with journalists and media professionals in order to advocate for media coverage of police corruption led by the interest to strengthen the transparency and accountability of the Ministry of Interior and the State Police.
In an open forum approach, the workshop will address the following issues:
- Police corruption, prevalence, types and causes;
- Anti-corruption approach and the role of oversight institutions;
- Media coverage of police corruption: challenges and opportunities;
- The contribution of the media in enhancing transparency and accountability as anti-corruption instruments.
Panelist: Lutfi Dervishi, Media Analyst
Moderator: Arjan Dyrmishi, Security Affairs Expert, IDM
